Ballroom dancing as popular as it is now did not get that much recognition until the 19th century. Before that this was only mostly danced by the upper class people of England. When 1920’s rolled in, competition in this style of dance emerged and so the ballroom dancing was standardized. This was primarily done so teaching it becomes easier so there is now a set with technique, tempo and rhythm. Thus the birth of sophisticated Waltz, the passionate and inviting Tango, the sexy Paso Doble and the lively Jive and Fox Trot.
Waltz – one of the oldest dance there is but now a part of the modern ballroom dancing in the International Style category. The rhythm for this dance is slow. The beat for waltz when danced is about 90 per minute.
Tango – a dance from Argentina, this has two styles of dancing. The first is the American one and the other is the International. Most dance contest in ballroom dancing would prefer the International style of course. The American style offers the dancer more freedom in movement than the International one.
Foxtrot – this is a type of ballroom dancing was executed to big band music. Made famous by an actor named Harry Fox, this was later on danced to rock and roll music after Rock around the Clock music was publicly released.
Quickstep – this type of dance was said to be an evolution of the foxtrot. The steps are quicker with different patterns altogether. Jazz songs are normally used for this dance.
